Evolution of the Dortmund logo
Dortmund logo | 1945 – 1964
The first logo was introduced in 1945. In this period Borussia Dortmund was playing in the Oberliga West, a first division league which dominated German football through the late 1950s.
Dortmund logo | 1964 – 1974
The second logo. In this period Borussia Dortmund entered the first established professional league in Germany, the Bundesliga. Also in this period Borussia Dortmund won their first DFB-Pokal and European Cup Winners’ Cup. The end of the period with this logo (beginning of 1970s) were characterized by financial problems, relegation from the Bundesliga in 1972, and the opening of the Westfalenstadion.
Dortmund logo | 1974 – 1976
The third logo. In this period Borussia Dortmund was fighting to get back to the Bundesliga. They succeed to get the promotion in 1976.
Dortmund logo | 1976 – 1978
The fourth logo. In this period Borussia Dortmund was still struggling with financial problems and lack of success, positioned in the middle of the Bundesliga table.
Dortmund logo | 1978 – 1993
The fifth logo. This was a return to the former Dortmund logo from 1974-1976. In this period Borussia Dortmund continued to suffer from financial problems through the 1980s. They narrowly avoided being relegated from the Bundesliga again in 1986 by winning a third decisive playoff game against Fortuna Köln.
Dortmund did not enjoy any significant success again until a DFB-Pokal win in 1989.
Dortmund logo | 1993 – present
The present logo. This logo was introduced in the golden age (the 90’s) for Borussia Dortmund. In this period Borussia Dortmund made it to the 1993 UEFA Cup final, which they lost to Juventus. They won 2 Bundesliga titles in a row in 1995 and 1996. Dortmund also won the DFL-Supercup in those years (95/96)
In 1996–97 Dortmund reached its first European Cup final and won against Juventus. They continued the success with becoming the World club champions after beating Brazillian cub Cruzeiro in 1997.
With this logo the club has, by far, had the most success.
